While They Watched

Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.” (Acts 1:9-11)

The disciples were looking for Jesus in the wrong place. They were gazing into the skies where He ascended, but He was not there. How often do we, like the disciples, look for the Lord in the places we expect -- but He has moved on. Yet, if we simply remember the things Jesus told us, we will understand He is being true to the word He spoke. He has gone to be with the Father, He dwells in us by His Spirit, and He is coming again to receive us to Himself. That is the blessed hope of every believer, and believers know where to find the Lord.

Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father.” (John 14:9)

When we look with the eyes of faith, we see Jesus every time. He is not found in our words or deeds, no matter how noble; but He is readily available to those who humble themselves and take Him at His Word. In fact, He is the Word of God, and the faithful draw near to hear every word He speaks. Believe that He is near, and you will find your joy in His presence.

Let's Pray - Father God, thank You for the reality of Your work and presence in my life. May the Spirit of Christ find a peaceful and healthy resting place in my heart today. Amen.
