Get Wise Counsel

My son, hear the instruction of your father, and do not forsake the law of your mother; for they will be a graceful ornament on your head, and chains about your neck.  (Proverbs 1:8-9)

The church of Jesus Christ is blessed with precious saints the Lord has placed there for our benefit. They are a fountain of life, and if we are willing to receive from them, their counsel will help us, strengthen us, and spare us untold and unnecessary pain. Every child of God should find himself or herself in the company of those who have walked with the Lord longer than they have. Fathers and mothers of the faith are precious jewels, and we must be sure to adorn our lives with them. Seek, hear, and heed the instructions of your spiritual parents and leaders. They are gifts to you from the Lord.

Godly counsel and advice are two different things. We can obtain advice from any number of sources, and it may or may not be beneficial, especially as it pertains to spiritual things. What is advisable and expedient in the world system of things is not necessarily so in the spirit! However, counsel from godly men and women is rooted in the scriptures, and it is based on a heavenly value system. Worldly advice cannot compare to the guidance we receive from those who know God and walk in His ways, and they are always ready and willing to share their wisdom freely. Remember, the only way to obtain wisdom is to seek it diligently and receive it gladly from those who are wise. That is what the Bible teaches.

Let’s Pray – Father, thank You for placing wise men and women in the church to give us good and biblical counsel. We will seek them out and heed their words as the Bible instructs. Amen.

  1. Truth! The enemy will say you don't need this or that in an attempt to isolate and diminish. I have even heard, "That person isn't God, you don't need to take what they say so seriously." Wait a second! Godly counsel is from God. Its that serious. Thank for this reminder, I am so grateful for the wise, true, and Godly counsel I have been given.
