That Stumbling Stone

. . . but Israel, pursuing the law of righteousness, has not attained to the law of righteousness. Why? Because they did not seek it by faith, but as it were, by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumbling stone. (Romans 9:31-32)

The Lord gave very specific, even painstaking directions to Moses, establishing laws and regulations that affected every facet of Israel's social, political, economic, and spiritual life. “The Law of Moses” was the body of directions and requirements handed down to them, which they were to follow explicitly. However, the law was not to be understood and applied in a sterile or legalistic fashion, but in an atmosphere of living faith and intimacy with God. The rules of God were meant to develop the rule of God, which Israel was to attain by an ever-deepening relationship with the Lord. That was the pathway laid out before them, that is, the law that leads to righteousness. They did not walk in that pathway, and the consequences were dire. Let the same not be said of the church!

The “stumbling stone” Paul speaks of here is Jesus Christ, and He remains that stumbling stone to anyone who would come to the Father by any other means, religion and legalism being among the chief offenses. Jesus remains the open door to heaven, both now and in the eternal sense. He is the way, the truth, and the life; and no one can come to the Father but by Him. Jesus is the Chief Cornerstone, and His children stand on Him, the solid rock of their salvation. Therefore, every man and woman must make a decision  - - to stand on Christ or to stumble over Him. The choice is ours. Let us choose wisely.

Let's Pray - Father God, help me to come to You by faith. I cannot earn what You have freely given me in Christ. Thank You for the gift of salvation through the sacrifice of my Savior. Amen.
